Greetings from Per Björkdahl!

What a summer and autumn it has been! While we hope you’ve been relaxing and recharging, ONVIF has been busy with our work of continuing to develop and release new profiles and spreading the message of interoperability within the physical security market and beyond.

These activities have taken many forms, from the release of Profile A for advanced access control and the Release Candidate for Profile T, for advanced video streaming  – both in July alone! – to the participation of ONVIF in several educational webinars, media activity and our presence at industry events around the globe. These publicly facing activities are in addition to internal ONVIF events, including a lively and productive set of internal committee meetings held in September, our Annual Meeting webinar held in late October and our 17th Annual Developers’ Plugfest, held in Seoul, South Korea in November.

We’re very pleased with the work we have been able to accomplish in our ninth year as an industry alliance and are extremely excited about the initiatives we’ve just begun to tackle that will help to lead our organization – and we think the industry – into future phases of interoperability.

To learn more about these and other ONVIF initiatives, please read on. You can also follow us on social media to stay on the cusp of what’s next for ONVIF!

ONVIF Releases Profile A for Broader Access Control Configuration

ONVIF has published the final release of Profile A for broader access control configuration that establishes a standardized interface for access control clients and expands the configuration options of ONVIF conformant access control systems. The release allows for the mixing and matching of access control devices and clients within a system, facilitating interoperability for multi-vendor projects.

ONVIF Profile A encompasses daily access control functions for granting and revoking employee credentials, creating and updating schedules and making changes to access control privileges within the system. Profile A deepens interoperability within the access control market by increasing functionality and system management functions at the client level, enabling the configuration of credentialing, scheduling and access privileges through the Profile A conformant client interface.

The interoperability established by Profile A allows end users and system integrators to make hardware and software choices based on functionality and performance, and will also bridge the gap between legacy hardware and new software if both are Profile A conformant. The new Profile further enables integration between access control and IP video management systems when combined with ONVIF Profile C for basic access control and Profile S for video streaming.

ONVIF Publishes Release Candidate for Profile T for Advanced Video Streaming

ONVIF also published the Release Candidate (RC) for Profile T. The Profile T RC is a draft specification with advanced streaming capabilities that includes support for H.265 video compression and an expanded definition of features that extends the capabilities of ONVIF video profiles for system integrators and end users.

ONVIF Profile T for advanced streaming employs a new media service that enables the support of H.265 video compression, based on the H.265 standard developed by several different international standards organizations that specifies how to decode data into displayable video. Profile T broadens the scope of the ONVIF video profile to include both the H.264 video compression standard that is widely used in video surveillance solutions today and H.265 video compression, which is set to become the defacto video compression standard in the very near future. In addition to support for multiple video compression types, Profile T also establishes rules regarding motion detection, meta-data streaming and other important features that ultimately offer an expanded, standardized feature set to system integrators and end users, in addition to interoperability between manufacturers’ solutions.

ONVIF Member Spotlight

Travis Gredley, Product Manager for Integrations at Avigilon, Full Member

What does Avigilon do?

Avigilon provides trusted security solutions to the global market. We design, develop, and manufacture video analytics, network video management software and hardware, surveillance cameras, and access control solutions, which can work with a wide range of 3rd party systems.

How long has Avigilon been in the physical security market?

Avigilon has been in the physical security market since the first commercial launch in 2004.

Why did you join ONVIF and how long has your company been a member of ONVIF?

In 2009, we adopted the ONVIF API because of its ability to facilitate a transition from analog to IP to high-definition (HD) surveillance. As pioneers in HD surveillance, we recognized early on that ONVIF would be a key driver of the industry. Providing an open interface was both powerful and would enable Avigilon to continue supporting our open platform for integration.

Is your company involved in any particular working groups?

We are currently interested in both the Use Case and Profile T working groups because we aim to continue increasing the support we offer to our growing customer base. In particular, the Profile T working group is addressing some market needs that have significantly grown in importance since the release of Profile S, and we’re committed to upgrading our standard interface to be Profile T compliant.

What does it mean to you to be member of ONVIF and what kinds of benefits have you seen as a result?

Since 2009 we have utilized the ONVIF protocol as our standard API within our VMS offering and, with limited exceptions, in all of our camera offerings.

We believe this is a strong example of our commitment to the advancement of the standards ONVIF has put in pace. Moreover, for our customers this provides them with a consistently open Avigilon solution that simplifies integration. As a result, the Avigilon solution supports a broad range of ONVIF compliant 3rd party cameras and VMS applications. And with this integration, we can build systems that both support legacy systems that our customers have already invested in, while also allowing them to migrate over to new platforms as they scale.

Are there any specific benefits it brings to your business?

Avigilon’s ONVIF membership has helped us continue to be at the forefront of developing solutions that provide tremendous value to our partners and customers. Our industry is at the verge of further advancement in artificial intelligence technologies and IoT, which require connected systems. Standards such as ONVIF will continue to play an important role for this advancement and growth.
