Welcome,
to the first edition of our ONVIF newsletter, a vehicle that we hope will keep you up to date with the activities of ONVIF and its many committees and working groups as the organization continues its goal of promoting a single interface for interoperability between IP products in physical security. Over the past six months, we achieved many accomplishments and milestones, most notably reaching more than 1,000 ONVIF conformant products released to the market. ONVIF members gathered in Shenzhen, China, for the 2011 ONVIF annual meeting, held in conjunction with the China Public Security Expo, where a roster of speakers highlighted the progress of interoperability standards across the globe. And in early January, we announced Profile S, the first in a series of profiles and related test tools to be introduced over the coming months, with the goal of simplifying the system design process using the ONVIF specification.
ONVIF will continue to build on the momentum of these successes and work toward the introduction of an access control specification, an interface that will greatly simplify the integration of IP video and access control as well as work to open up the traditionally proprietary access control market. These protocols have been widely considered barriers to open systems in access control.
For those of you traveling to ISC West in Las Vegas later this month, we hope you will join us for our annual demonstration of ONVIF at work. With the technology of many of our members that will be on display, the event will provide a great opportunity to talk with some of these member companies that are actively involved in the development and implementation of the ONVIF specification.
We hope you’ll be our guest at our demonstration and reception at ISC West, which will be held March 29 2012, 4:00PM 7:00 PM at the Venetian Hotel in Bellini Rooms 2002 & 2003. To register, please click here.
Warm regards,
Jonas Andersson

ONVIF introduces Profiles to simplify system design
As the popularity of ONVIF continues to grow and the number of conformant products available on the market rises, ONVIF has adopted the use of profiles to aid systems designers and specifiers in determining which devices are compatible with one another. The introduction of profiles eliminates the need for extensive technical knowledge of the specific versions of the ONVIF specification released since 2008.
For example, users will no longer need to determine if specific devices introduced in ONVIF 2.0 are compatible with clients that conform to ONVIF 1.0 or with newer versions introduced in the future. Instead, users will be able to easily select the appropriate profile that offers interoperability at a specific functional level between units and software that fits their needs.
Profile S, the first in a series of profiles to be introduced over the coming months, describes the common functionalities shared by ONVIF conformant video management systems and devices such as IP cameras or encoders that sends, configures, requests or controls the streaming of media data over an IP network. The profile includes specific features such as pan, tilt, zoom control, audio streaming and relay outputs.
“Profile S, which addresses common functionalities between devices in an IP video system, will be followed by additional profiles,” said Jonas Andersson, Chairman of ONVIF’s Steering Committee. “Our introductions of profiles will become even more important as ONVIF moves into the access control arena with our planned released of the access control specification this year.”
WHY JOIN ONVIF?
ONVIF’s focus on true interoperability provides membership benefits for manufacturers as well as end users, integrators and specifiers. A nonprofit organization, ONVIF is open to all companies and interest groups who would like to participate in the goal of creating a global standard for IPbased physical security.
ONVIF is already supported by the majority of the largest network video manufacturers, representing device manufacturers, integrators and Video Management Systems companies. The organization’s member base gives an indication of what we can expect a multitude of ONVIF conformant products on the market, in all parts of the world.
Membership comes at three levels of engagement, and the organization has clearly defined membership rules. To learn more about ONVIF membership, please click here.
