ONVIF Newsletter April 2018

Greetings from Per Björkdahl,

Hello friends, and happy 10th anniversary, ONVIF!

As I write this note of reflection about the last ten years, it is with no small amount of amazement to think that ONVIF began in 2008 with a small group of fierce market competitors. Putting their rivalries aside, those companies – among them Bosch Security Systems, Sony Corp. and my company Axis Communications — set out to develop a path forward for the physical security industry that would help guide it through the early days of the transition to IP video.

ONVIF Challenge

The first ONVIF Open Source Spotlight Challenge is now underway! This technology competition calls on developers and students to create open source applications for innovative IP video streaming applications. The two-month online challenge is offered in conjunction with BeMyApp and offers lucrative prizes for developers, with a prize pool offering of $20,000. Participants will submit a mobile or desktop app that connects to an IP camera for instant rewards, as well as the opportunity for major cash prizes. We look forward to seeing some innovative ideas generated as part of the competition, and the opportunity to open up a dialogue regarding how video streaming applications can help to resolve global security issues.

Greetings from Per Björkdahl!

These guidelines would not only provide a common framework of how IP cameras, recorders and software could finally speak the same language but ultimately establish a base layer of functionality that allowed each particular manufacturer to capitalize on its own individual strengths. These resources, which would otherwise be allocated to writing individual APIs for communication between their camera and that of 100 NVRs, for example, could now be spent instead on developing innovative new features, specializing their offering for particular vertical market applications, or new engineering or product development to solve yet another technological stumbling block our industry faces.

Looking forward, the demands of our industry continue to mirror the world at large, each day demanding more and more connectivity and interoperability. This in an effort to harness the massive amounts of data our sensors collect to produce actionable intelligence but also to automate this information collection in an attempt to control its volume and frequency. Managing this information in an intelligent way also means ensuring that it is delivered efficiently and to its intended recipients.

The work from ONVIF focused on interoperability will mean the continued development of communication methods that can enable different systems to interact with one another for a wide range of applications – traffic camera management, public safety, critical infrastructure protection, retail management and many more.

As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we recognize with great appreciation that the position our organization is in today is a direct result of the hard work, engineering expertise and intellectual resources that our member companies have dedicated to the work of ONVIF.  I know the same will be true as the next ten years of interoperability concludes.

With many thanks,

Per Björkdahl

ONVIF Member Spotlight

Stephen Serplus, Principal Firmware Engineer for Tyco Security Products, part of Johnson Controls.  Full member level.

What does Tyco do?

Tyco Security Products is a unified group of world-leading video, access control, location-based security and intrusion brands.

How long has Tyco been in the physical security market?

Many of the brand families under the Tyco/Johnson Controls umbrella have been active in the market for more than two decades, in such segments as video surveillance, access control, and intrusion alarm. Tyco Security Products (American Dynamics), founded in the early 1970s, of which I am a part, has enjoyed a long history of success in the physical security market.

Why did you join ONVIF and how long has your company been a member of ONVIF?

ONVIF established itself early on as the main interoperability global standard for IP-based physical security.  Tyco Security Products was the market leader for analog video and as such, the ONVIF standard was essential in the transition to IP control.

As part of that migration and expansion of our IP video portfolio, providing the ONVIF open interface to our products allowed us to expand both device reach from a recorder perspective and interoperability from a camera perspective.

Tyco Security Products has been a member since 2009 and in August of 2017, Tyco Security Products became a full member of ONVIF.

Is your company involved in any particular working groups?

I serve on the Technical Committee where Tyco is involved in driving the development of the ONVIF core specification along with other technical aspects of the standard.  Our technical experts are also involved in both the Video Enhancement Working Group and the Use Case Working Group. This enables us to be involved with helping to progress the standard and bring ideas that we feel should be considered for introduction into the standard.

What does it mean to you to be a member of ONVIF and what kinds of benefits have you seen as a result?

As a member of the ONVIF Technical Committee, we have seen at first hand the amount of effort that goes into supporting the standard and the amount of voluntary input put forth by the member companies. As the standard has evolved, it has helped us focus on where the market is going and what features we need to be supporting for 3rd party integrations.

Are there any specific benefits it brings to your business?

As a company, we have become more involved over time as the ONVIF standard has matured. We have increased the level of development on the ONVIF interface across both our recorders and cameras. We have seen significant growth of 3rd party recorders using our cameras with the ONVIF interface. We have also been able to increase the number of supported cameras with our recorders due to the ONVIF interface. As we look forward to the official release of Profile T and the 10-year anniversary of the ONVIF standard, it is an exciting time to be involved with the great work that the ONVIF group is producing.
