Chairmans message,

The month of June has provided a bit of a break from an extremely busy season for ONVIF, as we hosted and attended several events around the world over these past few months to increase the awareness of our organization. The global nature of ONVIF is necessary to support the work of our many committees and member companies who support the need for standardization for the security industry.

Last month ONVIF representatives met in Nuremberg, Germany, where ONVIF committee members representing our Steering Committee, Technical Committee, Technical Services Committee and Communications Committee gathered four days for a series of face-to-face planning sessions for the rest of 2012 and the year to come.

As we stated earlier, ONVIF participated in the IFSEC International event in May, held in Birmingham, U.K., where ONVIF hosted a panel discussion about the need for standardization in the industry and the evolution of initiatives like ONVIF. ONVIF also hosts events dedicated to developers who are responsible for deploying ONVIF within their own product lines. The second largest developer’s plugfest was held in March at Anixter’s Chicago offices. Marking the first time many vendors were able to test out their implementations of Profile S. More than 20 different manufacturers participated in nearly 260 hours of testing at this event.

While it’s clear that our dedicated committee members and executive leaders of ONVIF put forth many hours to promote the specification and refine our approach to the market, these efforts are happening in tandem with ONVIF’s ongoing standardization work. These efforts, in conjunction with organizations like the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization and the global International Electrotechnical Commission, are inching the market closer to the benefits of a single, ratified standard for interoperability.

Roundtable Panel Discussion at IFSEC

At this year’s IFSEC International trade show, held in May in Birmingham, UK, ONVIF hosted a panel discussion of industry experts to examine interoperability issues for IPbased physical security devices. The session featured nearly an hour of debate and audience Q&A with the panel’s three participants, which included Jonas Andersson, Chairman, ONVIF Steering Committee; Gary Wong, Senior Research Analyst, Video Surveillance & Security Services, IMS Research and Ross Dorman, Managing Director for Chordell Solutions, an Oxford, UK-based systems integration consultancy.

Led by Editor Mark Rowe of Professional Security Magazine, the panel discussed market perception of the effectiveness of interoperability initiatives for IP security devices and how ONVIF’s interoperability specification has made great strides in the market. Panelists also discussed how end users are driving demand for more open systems from manufacturers, which compels integrators and consultants to become educated on interoperability initiatives to offer nonproprietary
solutions to their customers.

In addition to the panel discussion, Andersson also presented an educational update about ONVIF’s work as part of IFSEC’s Next Generation CCTV Theater, furthering the group’s efforts to raise the profile of interoperability specifications through events at major security conferences around the globe.
