ONVIF Newsletter October 2018

Greetings from Per Björkdahl,

Dear colleagues,

Our milestone year of 2018 has been one where we’ve recognized our great accomplishments, reflected on our past initiatives – both successful and not so successful – and have asked questions of our membership and ourselves about what will be in store for ONVIF in the next ten years. An organization like ours that is designed to serve both the needs of our industry and our members must be simultaneously looking inward and outward for the answers to the question of what the future will hold.

Greetings from Per Björkdahl!

Our success in providing our interoperability specifications to the market has led to remarkable adoption of our specifications and explosive growth in the IP video market over the past decade. We continue to refine existing profiles and develop new specifications that reflect the changing trends of security. So what is our next big challenge?

I would say that a major focus of serving the needs of this market means to continue expanding outward and demonstrating the value of security – and its information – to the many other ancillary markets with which the security market is already interfacing, at so many different levels. Integrations with building management systems, intelligent traffic platforms, safe cities, and usage in smart home applications are but a few of the technology segments in which we can see possible future value from our specifications.

Ultimately member feedback and industry dialogue will help shape the future of our alliance, and time and industry dynamics will help to further refine it.  We would also like your feedback — whether you are a member company, a company who hasn’t yet joined, a systems integrator, consultant or end user –  or someone who simply sees value in the mission of ONVIF and what it can contribute to our industry.

Watch on our blog and our presence at upcoming industry events for some opportunities to brainstorm and provide your perspective on where the industry is headed and how ONVIF might help facilitate the future advancement of security.

Kind regards,

Per Björkdahl

Chair, ONVIF Steering Committee

ONVIF Conformant Products Top 10K in 10th Year

After 10 years of innovating and collaborating, ONVIF is proud to announce that it has surpassed 10,000 conformant products available to the market today. We are proud of this large milestone, but recognize that looking beyond the number it means so much more.

“This number represents not only the success of ONVIF, but how our member companies, many of whom are competitors, have collaborated to provide solutions that are relevant and needed in the market. This is a strong testament to the importance of standards in our rapidly evolving marketplace.”

ONVIF began 10 years ago by three companies working toward a common goal, but now our member base extends to nearly 500 companies. Without the hard work, demand for change and collaborative efforts among our member companies, we would not be the institution we are today. Congrats to ONVIF and, more importantly, to all of our member companies.

Thank you for a decade of fresh ideas and the willingness to execute them.

ONVIF Gears up for Final Release of Profile T

ONVIF Profile T for advanced video streaming is in its final stages of development, with a release scheduled for October. Its advanced streaming capabilities include support for H.265 video compression and an expanded definition of features that extend the capabilities of ONVIF video profiles to systems integrators and end users.

ONVIF Profile T for advanced streaming employs a new media service that enables the support of H.265 video compression, based on the H.265 standard developed by several different international standards organizations that specifies how to decode data into displayable video. Still using H.264 compression? Fear not – Profile T supports both, and is future-proof like the rest of our Profiles.

H.265 is set to become the defacto video compression standard in the very near future. In addition to support multiple video compression types, Profile T also establishes rules regarding motion detection, meta-data streaming and other important features that ultimately offer an expanded, standardized feature set to system integrators and end users, in addition to interoperability between manufacturers’ solutions.
