ONVIF Newsletter June 2019

Greetings from Per Björkdahl,

Dear friends,

As I write this, engineers and software developers from many ONVIF member companies have just arrived home from another technical gathering that tested implementations of ONVIF in many different products. This most recent event, held in Tokyo, is the 20th time engineers have come together to pair their technology with that of fellow ONVIF member companies to ensure compatibility using the ONVIF Profiles. At these events, engineers are now testing the full suite of ONVIF profiles, which have been the cornerstones of ONVIF since nearly our inception a decade ago.

ONVIF Travels the Globe

ONVIF joined more than 27,000 security professionals at IFSEC, Europe’s leading integrated security event, last week at the ExCeL, London, UK. ONVIF exhibited alongside more than 40 member companies and hosted the popular ONVIF lounge, which provided charging stations for attendees to use throughout the show. We were pleased to have a few members help us answer attendee questions throughout the show. Special thanks to Hikvision, Costain, and Synectics for their time.

Greetings from Per Björkdahl!

Our most recent and exciting news, however, has nothing to do with Profiles!  While ONVIF has used Profiles to group together related functions, the ONVIF Core Specification also contains many other useful and important features and functions that are not included in a Profile.  Our most timely example is the ONVIF Export File Format, which specifies a common file type for exported video files from a recording device. This common format can provide huge gains in the speed and efficiency of investigations for law enforcement, as it ensures that these video files can be viewed on any video system that incorporates the ONVIF Export File Format.

The Export File Format is at the heart of a recent publication by the National Institute of Standards and Technology that endorses this approach for use by the FBI in its global law enforcement efforts.  We are very proud to have worked with NIST to optimize this feature for inclusion. ONVIF is equally honored that the International Electrotechnical Committee has also endorsed the ONVIF by including the Export File Format in its current published global standards.

Our Core Specification is rich with individual features that will be released over the coming months that will complement our Profile approach. We’re very excited to be able to share some of these with the market and be able to share some of the more innovative elements of ONVIF!

Kind regards,

Per Björkdahl

Chair, ONVIF Steering Committee

ONVIF Travels the Globe

ONVIF joined more than 27,000 security professionals at IFSEC, Europe’s leading integrated security event, last week at the ExCeL, London, UK. ONVIF was also proud to exhibit at ISC West 2019 in Las Vegas, alongside more than 90 other member companies. The week started with a standing-room-only panel presentation that discussed how interoperability standards in access control can contribute to smart building success. With perspectives from Bob Dolan, Director of Technology, Anixter; Per Björkdahl, Chairman of the ONVIF Steering Committee and Bryan Montany, principal analyst, IHS Markit, panel attendees heard various perspectives about the importance of standards and learned how ONVIF can contribute to the overall ease-of-use in a smart building environment. The video can be viewed here.

Throughout the week, ONVIF met with some of the member companies present at ISC West to discuss how ONVIF has impacted their business, and to learn what they believe ONVIF should focus on next. The conversations led to great feedback that we look forward to implementing in the future.

ONVIF Recommended as Standard for U.S. Law Enforcement

Export File Format, the ONVIF specification for the export of video from security surveillance recording platforms, is the new standard recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the exporting and playback of video surveillance recordings.

In a research project commissioned by the FBI to aid law enforcement in forensic investigations, NIST worked in conjunction with ONVIF to adopt the Export File Format to serve as the FBI’s new minimum interoperability requirements for exporting and sharing video clips, streamlining the playback process of video from different video recording platforms from different vendors.

We are very honored to have contributed our technical expertise from Dr. Hans Busch and Stefan Anderson to the NIST process as well as to the International Electrotechnical Committee, who has also adopted it as a global standard.

ONVIF Reaches 20th Developers’ Plugfest Milestone

It’s hard to believe ONVIF has just hosted its 20th Developers’ Plugfest, but time flies when you’re advancing the industry! This year, the event took place from May 29 – 31 in Tokyo, Japan.

Developers and engineers from 22 ONVIF member companies gathered at the three-day event to test their implementations of ONVIF Profiles with other ONVIF Profile-conformant products. Developers can test their products independently for profile conformance, as well as test for interoperability between their devices and those from other manufacturers. With 47 members testing their implementations of the six ONVIF profiles, attendees logged nearly 250 hours of testing. In addition to Profile interoperability tests, all ONVIF clients had the opportunity to test using the ONVIF Device/Client Test Tool.  From there, attendees were able to discuss with Test Tool developers any issues that arose during conformance testing.
