Dear friends,
It is always nice when you can start a new year with momentum, and we’re excited to have a full slate of activities to kickstart our 11th year in the business of developing interoperability for the physical security market. Much of our theme for the first part of this year is discussing how ONVIF is much more than just interoperability between video products and even between video and access control. Rather, ONVIF can be a significant contributor to a more advanced and interoperable system within a smart building or IoT ecosystem by enhancing device communication and system response.

ONVIF to Tackle Access Control and Smart Buildings at ISC West 2019 and PSA-TEC
ONVIF is pleased to announce its participation in ISC West 2019, April 9-13, at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas, Nev. ONVIF Steering Committee Chairman Per Bjorkdahl, will discuss “Driving the Future: How Interoperability Standards in Access Control Can Enable Smart Building Success” on April 9 from 1:30-2:30 PM. The presentation will focus on how growing user demand for third-party integrations are now driving new open platform approaches and the adoption of interoperability standards. These standards are in turn changing the dynamic of access control and its role within the smart building environment.

Intersec took place from January 20-22 in Dubai, where ONVIF representatives tackled a variety of topics. On Sunday, January 20, ONVIF Steering Committee Chair Per Bjorkdahl took part in a panel discussion on the topic of “Seamless Integration of Innovative Security Systems with Traditional Infrastructure.” Attendees heard multiple perspectives on the importance of interoperability in today’s industry and why a holistic solution is best suited to meet the needs of both security and process operation in an industrial organization.
ONVIF Hosts 19th Developers’ Plugfest
The 19th Developers’ Plugfest took place in Austin, Texas in late November, with a special focus on Profile T. Participants included developers representing a variety of ONVIF member companies, testing conformance between different products using any of the ONVIF profiles. The plugfest represents the final phase of product development for profiles, and allows ONVIF to address any issues before the final release. ONVIF would like to extend special thanks to Steve Dillingham of OnCam for his work as the Developers’ Plugfest chairman for the past five plugfests, and welcome Madhu Rao, who will assume the chairman’s position for future plugfests.
ONVIF Reflects on 2018 Activities in Annual Meeting
In early November, ONVIF held its 10th annual meeting, where they provided an overview of important activities in 2018 and perspectives on the year ahead. Attendees heard presentations on the final release of Profile T, as well as a comprehensive overview of the achievements of the organization over the past decade. ONVIF recognized the contributions of four individuals from various technical committees for their work on different profiles and committees. Award recipients included Fredrik Svensson of Axis, Dora Han of Hikvision, Baldvin Gislason Bern of Axis and Dr. Hasan Timucin Ozdemir of Panasonic.
Profile G, Open Source Challenge Winner Videos Released
ONVIF has released two new videos. One focuses on Profile G for edge storage and retrieval and the benefits it provides. You can view the video here. The other video is an interview with Liqiao Ying, winner of the first-ever Open Source Spotlight Challenge. His winning application, Cam X, is an artificial intelligence-based object detection system that utilizes blockchain solutions for storing information obtained from ONVIF cameras. ONVIF to Tackle Access Control and Smart Buildings at ISC West 2019 and PSA-TEC 2019
ONVIF is pleased to announce its participation in ISC West 2019, April 9-13, at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas, Nev. ONVIF Steering Committee Chairman Per Bjorkdahl, will discuss “Driving the Future: How Interoperability Standards in Access Control Can Enable Smart Building Success” on April 9 from 1:30-2:30 PM. In addition to this speaking slot, ONVIF will also host the ONVIF Lounge at Booth L0 within the Sands Expo, where attendees can relax and recharge their mobile devices, as well as learn more about our efforts toward interoperability.
ONVIF will be a featured speaker at PSA-TEC March 11-14 in Denver, where David Busco of ONVIF member company Anixter will discuss interoperability standards, including ONVIF Profile A, in the smart buildings environment. You can register for PSA-TEC here.

In addition, Stuart Rawling, member of the ONVIF Steering Committee, presented on “Seamless integration of innovative security systems with traditional infrastructures.” He discussed how different industry buzzwords, such as IoT, Cloud, Big Data and Analytics present both challenges advantages in our lives, and how best to plan for and mitigate risk within the ongoing technology and data revolution.

Committee chairs from the Technical, Technical Services and Communication Committees presented on their specific initiatives during 2018. In addition, annual election results were announced.
